Supporting a Growing Workforce

CASE STUDY

Delivering a New Staff Servery and Kitchen

Smurfit Westrock’s Mold site is a significant industrial operation. Following an extension that increased the facility by 35%, the site became the largest box factory in the UK, supporting a growing workforce as part of Smurfit Westrock’s global employee base of over 100,000 people.

Following KCM’s successful install at the Weston-super-Mare site, Smurfit Westrock engaged KCM to support the development of a new staff kitchen at the Mold facility. Previously, the site provided a canteen area for employee breaks, with vending machines forming the primary food and drink provision.

Smurfit Westrock identified the need for a dedicated kitchen and servery to provide employees with a wider and more nutritious range of food options.

Two large offices were repurposed for the new kitchen, which was designed by KCM following a series of phone and video consultations, alongside a site visit and survey to fine-tune measurements.

As the space was converted from office use, new services were required, including the installation of a new distribution board, along with water and waste connections from a nearby source. The project was an exciting one to be part of as KCM provided a full package of equipment and fit out works

A Clever Compact Kitchen Design

The existing office areas were stripped out by Smurfit Westrock’s contractors and handed over as a shell, allowing KCM to take control of the space. A kitchen ventilation system was installed, incorporating extraction and make-up air. Electrical supplies were taken from the new distribution board and distributed throughout the kitchen to suit the revised layout, with contactors fitted to cooking equipment to ensure safe shutdown in an emergency. A fire suppression system was installed in conjunction with the ventilation works and integrated into the site’s fire alarm system.

Fit-out works followed, including the installation of Altro safety flooring throughout, PVC hygienic wall cladding and stainless-steel finishes where required. A hygienic suspended ceiling with inset LED lighting was installed to improve illumination across the workspace. New water heaters were fitted alongside upgraded water and waste services, including a grease management system to ensure compliance with current regulations.

KCM’s in-house team took delivery and installed an array of catering equipment, including a Sammic dishwasher, Hoshizaki and Williams refrigeration, Retigo combination ovens, and a griddle, grill and induction range from Lincat. The kitchen staff were given various storage options with a large selection of shelving, racking a cupboard space.

Client Success: A Proven Partnership

Smurfit Westrock were impressed with the servery counter previously installed at the Weston-super-Mare site, leading to KCM being appointed to design and install the same proven solution at Mold. A selection of hot and cold modular units from Moffat was incorporated into the servery, along with bespoke fabrication for the till unit. A stainless-steel capping section was added to the top of the servery wall to create a tray slide. The project ran smoothly, with the programme strictly adhered to throughout and cooperation between KCM and the client team contributing to a successful outcome.

The kitchen fit out and install being carried out by KCM has gone very well. I would like to thank the numerous KCM teams who have carried out some great work to a high standard and most importantly safely without incident.

Simon Bennett, Project Manager – Smurfit Westrock
I was very pleased to be approached by Smurfitt Mold for this project, as it was testament to the work we carried out at their Weston-Super-Mare premises. Repeat work from happy customers is always our aim.

Working closely with the in-house facilities team, we were able to follow their brief and deliver a high quality setup to serve the rapidly expanding workforce.
