Selston Café is located at the heart of Selston Country Park. Surrounded by wildlife and parkland, the café provides an ideal spot for visitors to enjoy a scenic and relaxing coffee and bite to eat.
Ashfield District Council engaged KCM to refurbish the existing café, with the aim of making better use of its attractive surroundings and creating a more appealing destination for visitors.
The original layout was outdated and inefficient, prompting a full review of the internal arrangement. The removal of existing internal walls was identified as a requirement to form a shell, alongside external groundworks to enable the relocation of the toilet facilities to the other side of the building.
Guided by the brief from the Council’s Jas Hundal to expand upon the existing menu, particularly the coffee and drinks offering, KCM’s Steve Shepherd developed the layout and equipment specification. As the plan took shape, the Council wanted to better visualise the end result, so KCM produced elevation drawings of each wall alongside 3D isometric visuals to bring the front-of-house counter to life.
The project order was facilitated through Lindum BMS, who managed CDM, and KCM began constructing the program of works.
Delivering a Full Strip-Out and Fit-Out
KCM’s works began with a full strip-out, including the removal of walls, doors and frames, electrical and plumbing services, along with all existing café equipment. Adaptations to an external wall created a new serving hatch, with underground waste pipework routed externally. New internal walls were formed to create the kitchen, servery, seating and WC areas.
The kitchen was finished with hygienic HyRoc PVC and stainless-steel wall cladding, a full ventilation system and Altro non-slip flooring, which continued through into the servery up to the new bespoke counter, finished to complement the surrounding décor. Expona luxury vinyl tiles were installed within the seating area to provide a clean modern finish. A full redecoration was completed using scrubbable matt finishes to the walls and satin to the woodwork in a neutral colour scheme. KCM also installed a new DDA-compliant WC, along with air conditioning to improve comfort during warmer months in the park. To complete the transformation, new furniture was supplied and installed, including a breakfast bar.
Designing Within a Compact Space
With a compact space allocated for the front-of-house counter and back-of-house kitchen careful consideration was given during the design phase to include the required equipment while maintaining good flow and adequate storage.
The front-of-house counter featured a Cossiga refrigerated display case, a Sterling Pro display fridge and a Bravilor bean-to-cup coffee machine, selected for its capability and price point. A drinks blender, milkshake maker and water boiler provided the café with additional menu options. In the back-of-house kitchen, a suite of Lincat Silverlink cooking equipment included a boiling top, griddle, fryer and salamander grill, alongside a Sharp microwave and Hatco heated well. The kitchen also featured Hoshizaki refrigeration, a Sammic pass-through dishwasher and storage from EAIS and Moffat. Despite the space-led design challenges, KCM delivered a practical solution within the client’s brief and budget.

Selston café was a full turnkey project that we completed using all of our resources, from a demolition team forming the shell, to the fit out team adding finishes alongside the M&E works. The end result was outstanding, with local councillors attending site for the handover.
