in nursing care and to extend that to
everything that it does, with 56 rooms the
Home is registered to care for up to 60
People. In 2018 the care home was awarded
the coveted ‘Platinum’ status by the Gold

catering areas within the premises. Working
alongside the team from Prospect House and
Northstar, KCM submitted a design and
specification for the project that was
incorporated into the scheme.

Transformation
The new kitchen was previously a lounge and dining area, so works commenced with a complete strip out
of the space to allow progress with other elements. With a fifteen day program of works from the initial
strip out through to handover it was critical that all trades were well coordinated to achieve the timeframe.
Working with project partners Caterbuild UK and alongside RS Burgess & Sons, the fit out of the new
kitchen consisted of new flooring, suspended ceiling, hygienic wall cladding and new water, waste and
electrical services and lighting throughout.
In addition a new kitchen ventilation system was installed over the cookline consisting of two existing Rational combination ovens, Lincat fryer and a new Lincat OPUS 800 induction hob. By moving over to induction the kitchen will not only save energy but be more productive than the gas hob that it used previously. Service was also enhanced with the inclusion of a Lincat Panther mobile hot cupboard ensuring the storage and delivery of food to residents in the best condition. A new Williams Refrigeration walk in chiller was integrated into a corner of the kitchen greatly increasing the capacity of refrigerated storage and at the same time making good use of an awkward part of the kitchen, this was supported by a reach in Freezer from Hoshizaki. Bespoke fabrication was fitted throughout the kitchen to make best use of the available space from specialist Bridge Catering Fabrications.

One of the key considerations during the design process was
the ability of the Prospect House catering team to have an
efficient waste and washup area. KCM turned to waste
specialists IMC to incorporate the WasteStation, this allowed
for the care home to not only make the process far more
efficient, both in terms of staff time and waste collection
costs, but to also ensure that they are at the leading edge of
likely legislation preventing the use of food waste discharge
to the mains waste system.
The dishwasher from Meiko is also key to the care home incorporating thermal disinfection to the Ao30 standard, assisting with the safety of all residents, guests and staff.

KCM Catering Equipment Director Alistair White commented
“The works at Prospect House Care Home were a great
success, providing a new kitchen from start to finish in just
fifteen days on site. Central to this was a good planning, a
strict program of works alongside close teamwork with the
Principle Contractor and client.
The premises was occupied throughout the works adding an additional layer of complexity. The care home now has a state of the art commercial kitchen facility to allow them to continue to serve their residents the very highest standard of dining as part of their all round excellence.”
